Scott’s and Shackleton’s Antarctic expeditions inspired and amazed the world. A century on, the huts which served as the expeditions’ bases are within years (possibly months) of being demolished by the very elements that have helped preserve them.

These expeditions provided the clearest demonstration possible of the courage of spirit and the sheer physical determination required to push the boundaries of human existence – qualities as relevant today as they were 100 years ago.

In 2006, Compton worked with the New Zealand Trust to help prepare a fundraising plan to engage supporters resident in the UK and help raise the funds needed for the urgent conservation work.
