Hospices

Compton — Hospices

Hospices provide specialist end of life care. While regulated by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) most hospices are independent of the NHS and only receive around 30% (sometimes much less) of their funding from statutory sources.

The UK’s aging population will bring with it a projected 40% increase in need for end of life care by 2040. Hospices are in the news for feeling the pressure of increased costs and growing demand for their services. Many are reviewing their operational and fundraising plans to meet the unmet needs of their local communities.

We have worked with hospices for over 40 years and through long-term contracts, project-based campaigns and interim management services have been able to consistently grow and sustain funding across annual, capital and legacy programmes.

Royal Trinity Hospice, Clapham

Over the last 20 years our embedded team at Royal Trinity Hospice has helped to raise tens of millions from a range of income generation streams: from set piece, high profile events such as the Royal Trinity Gala – to thousands of regular grassroots donations.

With a focus on building wide catchment area social capital alongside high return fundraising, our team works with the Trustees and an impressive network of volunteer fundraisers to target over £5 million a year.

Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice, Glasgow

The Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice in Glasgow is known internationally for its award-winning hospice design and build, but is all about people and the communities it serves.

We have been working alongside the Chief Executive and Fundraising Team to develop a new fundraising growth strategy for PPWH – including a review of all income generation streams, advice on regional and international major donor events and our Asking for the Money training sessions.

Hospice in the Weald: the power of grassroots Individual Giving

Individual Giving across fundraising appeals, In Memory Giving and regular giving is the lifeblood of hospice grassroots fundraising and needs to be maximised in today’s uncertain and volatile landscape.

An objective and comprehensive external view of income generation work streams – including database utilisation, user experience, donor journeys and underpinning platforms – should highlight what people, programmes and tools are needed to achieve growth.

Hospice in the Weald provides care completely free of charge to patients with a terminal illness, and those important to them, in West Kent and northern East Sussex. We were pleased to work alongside the Hospice‘s fundraising team to help to review and assess its fundraising growth plans over the next 3 years.

Other assignments

St Christopher’s Hospice: 50 years of specialist care, education and research

A Compton team worked alongside the St Christopher’s fundraising team from 2005 to 2026. Over that time, in a powerful partnership between Compton team members, in-house fundraisers and volunteer leaders, over £160 million was been raised in annual, capital campaign and legacy income.

Heart of Kent Hospice, Maidstone

We worked with the Chief Executive and Director of Fundraising at the Heart of Kent Hospice on a capital fundraising feasibility study to develop a funding plan for the proposed new hospice in Linton near Maidstone. Our study team planned and led the drill down into local and regional networks to identify sources of influential volunteer leadership as well as sources of capital at the levels needed. A range of high level early commitments have already been made to enable the new 12-bed Inpatient Unit, larger spaces to meet the demand for Outpatient services and a better base and working spaces for the Community, Dementia and Care Home Teams.

Mountbatten Group - Isle of Wight and Southampton

Over a six-year period we provided Head of Fundraising and trust fundraising roles to manage and grow income generation across annual, major gifts and legacy programmes. Over Mountbatten’s two sites on the Isle of Wight and Southampton, our work spanned the integration of two databases into a consolidated CRM, the recruitment and development of the fundraising teams and the management of a full spectrum of fundraising income streams: from lottery to legacy promotion and the management of one of the biggest mass participation events in the UK: Walk the Wight.

North London Hospice: full-service fundraising

It was our privilege to work with the Trustees, Executive Team and Fundraising Teams at North London Hospice for over a decade. From 2012 to early 2023 we provided Director of Fundraising, Head of Fundraising and trust fundraising services to lead a small but effective in-house team. Over £45 million was raised under our direction and management - across annual fundraising, major gift campaigns and legacy promotion campaigns.

Oakhaven Hospice: fundraising database consulting

Hospices tend to have relatively small but very loyal databases of donor and supporters. All the more reason to ensure that data management is compliant, accurate and maximising community goodwill for fundraising. Following a fundraising strategy review we were able to provide the specialist database consulting needed to ensure that Oakhaven’s fundraising campaigns and appeals were effectively reaching its audiences of supporters in the New Forest, Totton and Waterside communities of Hampshire.

Willen Hospice: interim fundraising management

As a full-service consultancy we have the capacity to provide experienced interim Directors and Heads of Fundraising. We were pleased to be able to return to Willen Hospice in Milton Keynes (having last worked there over a decade ago) to lead the fundraising team for six months during a wider team reconfiguration.
